Principal Suite and Dressing Room

Principal Suite and Dressing Room

A bedroom that holds two people’s entire wardrobe and still feels like somewhere to sleep rather than somewhere to store things.

The decisions

The wardrobes run the full length of one wall and the full height of the room, with bronzed mirror fronts. Mirror was the right answer here for a practical reason rather than a decorative one: the room takes light from one side only, and a mirrored wall puts it back.

The wall behind the bed is an antiqued metallic finish, dark and slightly broken up. It absorbs the light instead of bouncing it, which is exactly what you want at the head of a bed and exactly the opposite of what you want opposite it. The two walls are doing opposite jobs on purpose.

Reading lights are built into the headboard wall rather than sitting on the bedside tables, which clears the surfaces and means the light comes from behind your shoulder where it is useful.

Details that matter

  • Bronzed mirror wardrobe fronts, warmer than a silver mirror and far less clinical
  • Concealed lighting to the wardrobe interiors, on the door
  • A deep carpet, because it is the one room where underfoot matters most
  • Layered bedding in ochre and teal against the dark wall, so the bed is the warm object in a cool room
