Navy Attic Bathroom

Navy Attic Bathroom

A bathroom under the eaves with a slatted ceiling that carries straight down the wall, and a navy floor that keeps the slope from feeling low.

The decisions

The slatted timber runs across the ceiling and straight down the wall without a break, which is what turns a sloping attic ceiling from a problem into the feature of the room. The stripe follows the pitch rather than fighting it.

Navy below, pale above. In a room with a low edge, keeping the dark colour at floor level and the light at head height stops the slope from closing in on you.

The round mirror is the one soft shape in a room made entirely of straight lines, and it is placed on the only full-height wall so it reflects the window back across the bath.

Details that matter

  • Slatted timber carried from ceiling to wall in one unbroken run
  • A black vanity with crystal handles, lit from underneath so it appears to float
  • Stone vessel basin rather than an inset, to keep the vanity top reading as one slab
  • Yellow used twice and only twice, which is what makes it look chosen rather than decorated
