English Green Kitchen and Boot Room

English Green Kitchen and Boot Room

Green, timber and a great deal of built-in joinery. The kind of kitchen that looks like it has always been there, which takes a lot of drawing.

The decisions

A single deep green used on everything, rather than the safer split of green base units and white walls. Committing to one colour top to bottom is what makes a room like this feel considered rather than decorated.

Timber worktops on the perimeter and stone where water sits. It is the practical version of a look that people usually do entirely in timber and then regret at the sink.

The arched dresser is the one piece of the room that is not square, and it earns its place by being the only one. Repeat an arch three times in a room and it becomes a theme; use it once and it becomes the reason the room is memorable.

The boot room

The most useful room in a family house and the one that is almost never designed. Hooks at two heights, open baskets rather than doors, a bench with boots underneath and a floor you can mop. It works because it is between the back door and the kitchen, so the clutter stops before it gets in.

Details that matter

  • Scalloped detail to the shelving, picked up again on the rug
  • A wood burner set into the original chimney breast, with the seating turned towards it
  • Rattan bar stools and pendant shades, to keep the timber from going heavy
  • Open shelving styled to be used, not staged
